01What changed
The 12th Conference of the Parties to the Stockholm Convention decided (decision SC-12/9) to list chlorpyrifos in Annex A, meaning its production and use are to be eliminated, with specific exemptions. One exemption is wood preservation against borers and termites in building foundations.
The UN depositary communicated the amendment on 16 December 2025; for most parties it takes effect one year after that communication. India's declaration under the Convention says any amendment to Annex A, B or C enters into force for India only when India ratifies it.
02Why it matters
Chlorpyrifos is widely used in Indian pre- and post-construction anti-termite treatment. Nothing changes in India today, but global listings tend to reach Indian rules a few years later, and multinational clients and exporters may start asking for alternatives sooner.
