01What changed
On 15 October 2026 the India Meteorological Department said the southwest monsoon had withdrawn from the entire country, and that northeast monsoon rainfall had begun over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, South Interior Karnataka, and Kerala & Mahe. In its 30 September outlook, IMD said October-to-December rainfall over South Peninsular India is most likely to be normal (88–112% of the long period average), while most other parts of the country are expected to get below-normal rain.
02Why it matters
Rain in the south through November and December keeps mosquito breeding and rodent movement high there, so vector and rodent work stays in season longer. In much of north and central India a drier, warmer autumn shifts work indoors: cockroaches, rodents and stored-product pests.
