01What changed
FSSAI's advisory of 15 October 2026 on handling, storage and transport of perishable food under controlled temperature reminds food businesses of their duties under Schedule 4 of the Food Safety and Standards (Licensing and Registration of Food Businesses) Regulations, 2011. One of the five duties it lists is to protect the product from dust, moisture, pests, physical damage and cross-contamination during storage, loading, unloading and transport.
State food safety commissioners, Indian Railways and FSSAI regional directors are asked to have licensing authorities and food safety officers keep strict vigilance during inspections and transport checks.
02Why it matters
Cold stores, warehouses, dairies, meat and fish units and food transporters can expect inspectors to look at pest protection in storage and loading areas, not only temperature. The advisory says action, including seizure and destruction, may be taken under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 for non-compliance.
Clients in these businesses are likely to ask for regular pest control and records they can show.
