01What changed
The Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers Welfare order S.O. 5234(E), dated 22 September 2026 and published in the Gazette on 23 September 2026, prohibits the registration of Paraquat Dichloride. Every certificate of registration granted for it under section 9 of the Insecticides Act, 1968 stands cancelled from the date of publication.
The order follows the draft S.O. 3800(E) of 10 July 2026, which invited objections for 30 days. State governments are to take steps to implement it.
02Why it matters
Paraquat is a weedkiller, not a household or public-health insecticide, so routine pest control work is not affected. Firms that also offer weed or vegetation control on non-crop land (factory compounds, warehouses, railway or industrial sites) should stop using paraquat products and switch to a registered alternative.
The CIB&RC posted the order on 7 October 2026.
Nothing urgent here. Good to know.
